Govt. College, Solan was established on 19th August 1959 and is situated in 47 Bighas of land to cater to the needs of higher education of Solan district and the surrounding areas in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It was started in a Private building near the Present D.C. Office, Solan. Initially the College had strength of about 150 students in the faculty of Arts. Faculty of Science and Commerce were added on later on. The College shifted to its Present Permanent building in 1964.This co-educational college has been progressing leaps and bound since its inception. The quality education that the college provides attracts students from different parts of the state and even adjoining states. The college has a well qualified and committed team of teachers who untiringly provide education in the streams of Humanities, Science, Commerce and Fine Arts at undergraduate level. The college also offers Post-Graduation in the subjects of English & Economics and has the honor of producing a number of college teachers and scholars. Professional courses such as BCA, BBA, PGDCA and Add-On-Course in Computer Awareness and JMC are running very successfully in the college and have helped many students compete efficiently in the present day job market. Besides being one of the most important agencies in providing formal education the college has also contributed in the field of distance and non-formal education. Since 1987, the college is running IGNOU Study Centre to provide education to those whose circumstances prevent allow them to get regular classroom education.
The college laboratories are equipped with latest and up-to-date apparatuses. A well stacked library offers wide range of books in all streams. Recently, the process of computerization of library has been launched through INFLIBNE which is a UGC sponsored library automation programme. Library offers an access to E-Resources and E-Books that have been made available through N-LIST of INFLIBNET. The college has also provided internet access to every department of the college through HIMSWAN. Students of the college can also access internet facility in the library, departments and computer labs.
A wide range of extra-curricular activities are done in the college such as NCC (Boys and Girls), NSS, Rangers & Rovers, Eco Club, Photography Club, cultural and sports activities help in the development of all round personality of students. Improvement in Communication Skills is another priority area of the college for which a Language Lab has been established to help the students cultivate effective communication proficiency.
Women Development Cell, Ambedkar Cell & Career Guidance and Placement Cell have been established in the college to help students coming from diverse social backgrounds. College Students Central Association (CSCA), Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A.) and Old Student Association (O.S.A.) actively participate in the functioning of the college. A number of clubs formed in the college provide opportunity to the students to explore their talents.
